Here is a very helpful activity to do with children and adolescents by Mary Spickelmier:
Treatment Goal: Making Change/Taking Responsibility
Introduction of Goal: Talk about why making change is about finding balance. Opposite of dysfunction is dysfunction (over eat/under eat; abusive parent/permissive parent)
Play Therapy Technique: Turning over new Leaf
Equipment needed: Large Tarp, Masking tape
Description of how it works: Group members sit on tarp. Each group member gets three strips of masking tape to put down in front of them on the tarp. On each piece of tape the group member writes one thing he/she wants to change. Turn the tarp over & put three more pieces of tape with goals for change. Discuss what it means to turn over a new leaf (fresh start etc.). Challenge the group to stand on the tarp (the side with things members want to change) and turn the tarp over (to the side with the goals) with out anyone stepping off the tarp.
Processing: It was hard, the group didn’t give-up, identify the leader and what that means (especially if a kid with low self-esteem is the one encouraging), keep trying, what happens when someone tries to sabotage group? Who is on your team regarding the goals for change?
